From above, Toki follows its river. The Toki River runs through the city, and the main streets and railway line follow the valley floor, with neighbourhoods climbing into the wooded hills on either side. The built-up area is long and irregular, broken by forested slopes, so the map shows a series of connected valleys, not a single dense centre.
Toki is in Gifu Prefecture, in the Tōnō area east of Nagoya, and is one of the main production centres of Mino ware, a style of Japanese ceramics with a history of several centuries. Much of the tableware used in Japan is made in this region. The JR Chūō Line runs through the city and connects it to Nagoya.

The JR Chūō Line runs along the valley, linking Toki to Nagoya. On the print it appears as a steady line through the town.
