Tongxi lies in the rural west of Chongqing Municipality, in the hilly country that rolls across the eastern Sichuan Basin. This is a landscape of low, rounded hills, narrow valleys and small streams, with farmland worked in terraces and ponds tucked into the hollows. From above, the town appears as a compact built area along its main roads, surrounded by an intricate pattern of fields and lanes.
Streets here do not follow a grid. They curve with the terrain, bending along valley floors and climbing gently between houses, while smaller lanes branch off in irregular directions. On a black-and-white print this produces an organic composition, where the density of the centre fades into a wide, delicate network of rural paths, ponds and field boundaries.
