Torbat-e Ḩeydarīyeh lies in Razavi Khorasan in north-eastern Iran, south of Mashhad, on a high plain ringed by distant mountains. Its name means the tomb of Heydar, after Qutb al-Din Heydar, a medieval Sufi mystic whose mausoleum stands in the city. Today the town is a regional centre for the farming country around it.
The region is one of the world's main sources of saffron. Each autumn, the purple crocus flowers in the fields around the town are picked by hand. On the map, this farmland forms a fine patchwork around the city, crossed by long straight roads and the water channels that serve the fields.
The city has a denser core of older, irregular streets at its centre, with broad modern avenues and rectangular blocks spreading outward in every direction.
