La mappa

Tulcán Map Poster & Print

Tulcán lies at nearly 3,000 metres in Ecuador's northern Andes, just a few kilometres from the Colombian border. On a map, the city is a compact Spanish grid of straight streets and blocks. It sits on a high plateau cut by ravines and surrounded by potato and dairy farms that climb the hills.

North of the city, the road to Colombia crosses the Carchi River at Rumichaca, the main border crossing between the two countries. The city itself has grown as a trading post for goods passing through. Green spaces and the cemetery appear as clear gaps in the regular grid of streets.

Tulcán is best known for its cemetery, where cypress hedges have been clipped into topiary sculptures since the 1930s, starting with the work of gardener José Franco. A Tulcán map poster shows a high-altitude border city in clean lines, with its grid, the ravines around it and the road leading north.

Colonial grid

Straight streets form a regular pattern of blocks around the centre. On the map they give the city a neat, ordered look.

02

Topiary cemetery

The famous cemetery occupies a distinctive block of the city. Its sculpted cypress gardens are Tulcán's best-known sight.

03

Rumichaca crossing

The road north leads to the border bridge over the Carchi River. It links the city directly with Colombia.
