Tūnēri lies in northern Kerala, inland from the Malabar coast in the Kozhikode district. Like much of this part of the state, it is less a single compact town than a continuous spread of houses, gardens and small commercial centers along the roads, set among coconut palms, areca trees and patches of paddy.
The land rises gently from the coastal plain toward the foothills of the Western Ghats further east. On a map this produces a pattern of winding roads that follow ridges and valleys, with small streams running west toward the sea. Many families here have strong links with the Gulf countries, a connection shared by much of the Malabar region.
