Uppsala University, founded in 1477, is the oldest university in Scandinavia. It is part of the city of Uppsala, north of Stockholm, where university buildings, the cathedral and the castle share a compact historic centre. Carl Linnaeus taught here, and his name remains closely linked to the city.
The map is divided by the Fyris river, which runs north to south through the centre. On the west bank, the ground rises toward a ridge with Uppsala Cathedral, the University Hall, the Carolina Rediviva library and, on the height, Uppsala Castle. On the east bank, the streets form a more regular pattern of blocks with shops and housing.
