La mappa

Usinsk Map Poster & Print

Usinsk lies in the north of the Komi Republic, just south of the Arctic Circle, near the Usa River, a major tributary of the Pechora. It was built from the late 1960s to serve the oilfields of the region. From the start it was a planned town, and this shows clearly on a map: its shape is deliberate, compact and very different from the land around it.

The residential centre is a tight grid of apartment blocks and straight streets. It is designed to keep distances short in a long, hard winter. Around it the map breaks into a pattern typical of the northern taiga and tundra: countless small lakes, meandering streams, bog, and a few straight roads and pipelines heading out towards the oilfields.

Usinsk has one of the most distinctive outlines of any town of its size. A Usinsk map poster shows a small block of city set in a wide landscape of water and marsh. It is a clear record of how people have made a home in a demanding part of the North.

01

Compact centre

Planned in one period, the town centre is a dense, orderly block of streets and buildings, with none of the gradual growth seen in older settlements.

02

Lakes and bogs

Small lakes and wetland streams surround the town on all sides. In black and white they form an irregular dotted pattern that fills the margins of the print.

03

Roads to the fields

Long, straight roads leave the town for the oilfields and rail line, cutting across the wetlands in lines that are clearly engineered.
