Uttiramerūr lies in northern Tamil Nadu, south of Kanchipuram, in a landscape of paddy fields, irrigation tanks and small villages. The town is widely known for its tenth-century Chola inscriptions, carved on temple walls, which describe in detail how members of the village assembly were chosen.
