Valls is the capital of the Alt Camp county in Tarragona province, a short distance inland from the Mediterranean coast. On a map, its old quarter shows as a dense knot of narrow, irregular streets around the church and main squares, surrounded by wider streets from later growth and then by the farmland of the Camp plain.
The town is known across Catalonia for two traditions. It is considered the birthplace of the castells, the human towers built by rival colles, and of the calçotada, the winter feast of grilled spring onions. Both give Valls a strong identity far beyond its size.
