La mappa
Vanino Map Poster & Print
Vanino sits on the western shore of the Tatar Strait, in Russia's Khabarovsk region, facing Sakhalin across open water. On a map the town has a clear logic: a deep, sheltered bay cuts into the coastline, and the town wraps around it, with piers, rail sidings and cargo terminals along the water and houses spread over the slopes behind.
The railway gives the place its shape. The Baikal-Amur Mainline reaches the coast here, and tracks fan out toward the port before ending at the water. A rail ferry has long linked Vanino with Kholmsk on Sakhalin, so the line continues across the strait by boat. In the twentieth century the port was also a transit point on the way to the camps of Kolyma, a history remembered in a well-known song.
A Vanino map poster keeps all of this in a few lines: the bay, the tracks and the loose grid of residential streets. Beyond the town, forest and hills fill the paper, with only a few roads heading inland toward Sovetskaya Gavan and the rest of the region.

End of the line
Rail lines from the Baikal-Amur Mainline split into sidings near the port. From above they appear as long, parallel strokes that stop at the water.
Ferry to Sakhalin
The rail ferry crossing to Kholmsk makes Vanino a link between the mainland and the island. On the map the open strait takes up the whole eastern side.

Perché Vanino
Una mappa che ha un significato
People with ties to the Russian Far East, from sailors and railway workers to families who once passed through, often want a picture of this coast. A spare map of the bay and the tracks shows why the town exists better than a photograph can.
You can change the title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example to add a year or a family name. Then choose one of five styles. Blueprint works well for a port like this. Noir and Sand give a quieter, more atmospheric look.
