Vijayapuri North lies on the Telangana side of the Nagarjuna Sagar Dam, one of India's largest masonry dams, built across the Krishna River in the mid-twentieth century. The town grew up as a project settlement for the dam. Its map shows that origin, with planned colony streets and quarters laid out on the rising ground near the river.
Behind the dam, the reservoir spreads out as a huge body of water with a ragged, rocky shoreline. When the valley was flooded, ancient Buddhist remains from Nagarjunakonda were moved to higher ground. Some are now preserved on an island museum within the lake. Below the dam, the river continues in a narrower channel through the hills.
