Virú lies in La Libertad, south of Trujillo, in one of the river valleys that cross Peru's coastal desert. The map shows a sharp contrast. The town and its fields form a green, closely patterned area along the valley, while the land on either side is bare and dry. The Pan-American Highway passes through, forming the main line of the composition.
The Virú Valley has an important place in archaeology. In the 1940s, it was the subject of a pioneering settlement survey that studied how communities in one valley changed over thousands of years. Today, large irrigation projects have expanded farming across the surrounding desert, and the area is known for export crops.
A Virú map poster shows the town grid, the highway, the irrigation channels and the huge fields they have created. Everything is organised by water, and in monochrome the boundary between cultivated land and desert becomes a striking graphic edge.

The highway runs through Virú along the coast of Peru. It is the strongest line on the poster, connecting the town with Trujillo and the rest of the coast.
