La mappa
Vyatskiye Polyany Map Poster & Print
Vyatskiye Polyany stands on the Vyatka River in the south of Kirov Oblast, close to the border with Tatarstan. The town sits on the river's right bank, where the ground is higher, and its map shows streets stepping back from the water in fairly regular rows. On the opposite side the land is low and open, a broad floodplain of meadows, oxbow lakes and forest.
The town grew around the railway and its crossing of the Vyatka, and later around the Molot engineering works. During the Second World War the plant produced PPSh submachine guns in large numbers, and in the postwar decades it became known for the Vyatka motor scooter. Industrial areas still take up a large share of the map.
A Vyatskiye Polyany map poster is built on a strong contrast between banks. On one side are the organised blocks of a Soviet-era industrial town, with factory grounds and residential districts. On the other, the river's floodplain spreads out in loose, curving shapes of old channels and lakes, crossed by the long straight line of the railway bridge.

Railway crossing
A long bridge carries the railway over the Vyatka, a straight line that cuts across the river's curves and shaped the town's growth.
Factory districts
Large industrial plots around the Molot works appear as broad, simple blocks, distinct from the finer grid of the residential streets.
