La mappa
Vyazniki Map Poster & Print
Vyazniki stands on the Klyazma river in the east of Vladimir Oblast. The town grew on the high northern bank, and on a map the older streets climb up from the water in short, steep lines, while the flat floodplain on the opposite side stays largely open, with meadows, oxbow lakes and forest. Ravines cut into the slope and divide the town into separate sections.
From the nineteenth century, Vyazniki was known for flax processing and linen weaving, and its mills shaped the town's economy for generations. It is also the birthplace of the Soviet songwriter Alexei Fatyanov, whose lyrics became part of popular Russian song, and the town holds a festival in his memory. Churches and merchant houses survive in the historic centre above the river.
A Vyazniki map poster shows the contrast between the two banks. The built-up side has a varied pattern of streets bending around ravines and slopes, while the floodplain across the river is marked by the curving lines of old channels and lakes. The Klyazma's wide bend links the two, giving the composition a strong, natural focus.

Ravines and slopes
Gullies running down to the river break the town into separate districts, so the street pattern changes from block to block.
Floodplain lakes
Oxbow lakes and old river channels scatter across the lowland opposite the town, drawing soft, curving shapes on the map.
