Wailuku is the county seat of Maui and sits where the West Maui Mountains meet the island's central isthmus. On a map the town has a clear direction. Streets rise gently from the lowland toward the mountains and stop where the slopes become too steep. The road through Iao Valley continues inland into the mountains.
The town centre is compact and older than much of Maui's built-up land. It has a small commercial core, government buildings and churches along a few main streets. Around it, residential lanes spread across the lower slopes. To the east, Wailuku merges with Kahului, and together they form the island's main urban area on the isthmus.
Iao Valley is known for the Iao Needle, a green rock spire, and as the site of the Battle of Kepaniwai in 1790, part of Kamehameha I's campaign to unify the islands.
