Weiden in der Oberpfalz sits in northeastern Bavaria, a short drive from the Czech border. On a map its centre reads as one long market place. The old town stretches along a single axis, and narrow lanes branch off it at right angles. Around it the streets loosen into residential quarters, rail lines and industrial blocks, and the whole plan settles into the gentle, wooded country of the Upper Palatinate.
The Waldnaab runs past the town on its way south, drawing a soft line of meadow and riverbank along one side of the plan. Railway tracks and the motorway frame the edges, while the historic core stays compact and easy to read. The town is known for its porcelain industry, and the composer Max Reger spent his childhood and youth here before his career took him elsewhere.
