Wichita River
The river loops diagonally through town, lined with parkland and trails. Its curving course interrupts the surveyed street grid and gives the city its main natural line.

La mappa
Wichita Falls Map Poster & Print
From above, Wichita Falls is a North Texas city of straight lines and one winding exception. The Wichita River runs from southwest to northeast across the street grid, and its wooded banks and creek tributaries break up the regular blocks. Downtown sits close to the river, where the older street pattern is set at a slight angle to the surveyed roads that spread out over the flat prairie.
The city is named for waterfalls on the river that were washed away by a flood in the late nineteenth century. An artificial cascade was later built beside the highway so the name would once again have something to point to. Downtown also has the Newby-McMahon Building, a very small brick tower known as the world's littlest skyscraper and the subject of a long-told story about a misread blueprint.
A Wichita Falls map poster shows the open edges typical of a plains city. Arterial roads run out to farmland, Lake Wichita sits on the southern side, and the long runways of Sheppard Air Force Base lie to the north. In black and white, the meandering river stands out clearly against the survey lines around it.

Lake Wichita

Sheppard runways
North of the city, the air base forms a separate geometric block of long runways and taxiways, set apart from the residential grid.

Perché Wichita Falls
Una mappa che ha un significato
The poster suits people who grew up here, trained at Sheppard or studied at Midwestern State, and anyone who likes how a river breaks up a Texas grid. Seen from above, the city looks orderly, with one unruly waterway through the middle.
You can add your own title and a date, such as a posting, a graduation or a move, and choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. HD files for all six print sizes cost $9. Printed posters are also available, with an optional wooden frame.
