Xiejiawan is a town in the southeast of Gansu province, in the loess country that stretches across much of northwestern China. The land here is made of fine windblown soil, carved by streams into steep gullies and reshaped over centuries by hand-built terraces. Towns in this terrain tend to gather along valley floors, where water, roads and level ground are easiest to find.
The map of a place like this is shaped largely by relief. Streets run lengthwise along the valley, buildings pack into the level strip, and roads climb away in switchbacks toward villages on the uplands. Around the town, rural lanes trace the curves of terraced fields, a pattern that is distinctive to this part of China.
