Canal network
Straight and curving channels run through and around the town, many of them carrying the shapes of older waterways. They divide the plan into small, irregular pieces.

La mappa
Xinghua Map Poster & Print
Xinghua lies in the Lixiahe lowland of central Jiangsu, one of the flattest and wettest parts of the province. On a map the town is surrounded by water: canals cut in every direction, lakes spread out to the edges, and roads often have to follow embankments. The built-up centre sits as a compact block among this network of channels.
Around the town the countryside breaks into a pattern that is rare anywhere else. Farmers here built up raised fields, known as duotian, surrounded by water, and in spring the rapeseed on them turns the Qianduo area yellow. Xinghua is also known as the birthplace of the Qing dynasty painter and calligrapher Zheng Banqiao.
A Xinghua map poster makes the most of this texture. Water paths and blocks of land alternate across the sheet, so the result looks almost like a woven surface. The town centre gives it a focal point, and the surrounding canals keep the eye moving outward.

Raised fields
Beyond the town, land rises from the water in small separate plots. From above they look like scattered islands, a pattern specific to this part of the Lixiahe plain.
Surrounding lakes
Open water appears on several sides of the town, leaving calm blank areas on the poster that balance the fine detail of streets and canals.

Perché Xinghua
Una mappa che ha un significato
Xinghua suits someone with family roots in the Jiangsu water country, or anyone drawn to places where land and water share the map almost equally. The pattern works as a piece of graphic design as much as a record of a town.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line with a name, date or phrase, then choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint and Paper both suit the fine lines of the canals.
