Karst basin
The town sits on a flat pocket of land surrounded by limestone hills, so its outline stops abruptly where the ground begins to rise.

La mappa
Xingren Map Poster & Print
Xingren lies in southwestern Guizhou, in Qianxinan Prefecture, one of the most distinctive karst landscapes in China. From above, the town fills a patch of flat ground, and its roads and blocks spread across it until they meet the sudden rise of limestone hills. The result is a map whose edges are drawn as much by geology as by planning.
Recent decades have brought broad new avenues and large residential blocks, laid out in a regular pattern that contrasts with the irregular surroundings. Beyond the urban area, the land breaks up into conical hills, small basins and fields. Roads thread between them in winding lines, with villages tucked into the gaps.
A Xingren map poster shows the town as a compact, confident grid inside a restless terrain. In black and white, the empty spaces where the hills rise become part of the design, so the print has texture and depth even where there are no streets at all.

New avenues
Wide, straight roads and large blocks mark the town's recent growth and form a crisp, orderly pattern in the middle of the map.
Winding approaches
Roads leaving town twist between hills and small valleys, drawing loose, curving lines that contrast with the geometry of the centre.
