Yabase lies in western Tottori Prefecture, on the Sea of Japan side of Honshu. This is a region of low hills, coastal plains and shallow lagoons, where towns spread along rivers and main roads and rice fields fill much of the flat ground in between.
From above, the settlement appears as a network of streets surrounded by farmland, with roads leading toward larger towns nearby and the coast. The irrigation channels and rectangular paddy plots give the surrounding landscape a fine, even texture that works well in black and white.
