Yongxing is a town in the southeast of Gansu province, in the hill country between the Loess Plateau and the mountains of the Qinling range. From above, the settlement follows the floor of a river valley, where flat land is scarce and valuable. Streets run lengthwise along the valley, and the hillsides rise steeply on either side.
The surrounding land is shaped by centuries of farming on loess, with terraced fields stepping up the slopes in long curved lines. A Yongxing map poster shows the town as a narrow band of streets set against this ridged and folded countryside, with roads following the watercourses to neighbouring villages.
Settlements in this part of Gansu tend to stretch along valleys and roads, with smaller hamlets scattered on terraces higher up.
