Yunshan lies in eastern Gansu, in the hilly country of the Tianshui area, where the loess plateau is cut by rivers and gullies into steep ridges and valleys. Towns here tend to follow the valley floors, and on the map Yunshan's streets sit in the lowland while the land around them rises and folds.
