Zagora lies in south-eastern Morocco, in the Drâa valley on the edge of the Sahara. From above, the town follows the river and the main road through the valley, with long bands of palm groves on either side and dry, stony ground beyond them.
Jebel Zagora, a rocky mountain, rises close to the town and gives it its name. Zagora is known for a well-photographed sign stating that Timbuktu lies fifty-two days away by camel, a reminder of the caravan routes that once passed through the valley.
