Zwickau is in southwestern Saxony, on the Zwickauer Mulde river. The old town sits on the west bank, a compact area of irregular medieval streets around the market and St. Mary's Church. Beyond it, the city spreads out in wider nineteenth- and twentieth-century streets, with the river running north through the valley.
The city is known for music and cars. Robert Schumann was born here, and his house on the market square is now a museum. August Horch founded both the Horch and Audi companies in Zwickau, the Trabant was built here in the GDR years, and Volkswagen still produces cars nearby at Mosel. The August Horch Museum covers this history.
