Abalak is in the Tahoua region of central Niger, in the dry Sahel belt south of the Sahara. On the map, the town is a small, dense cluster in a very large empty space. There are few other lines around it, so the town itself stands out clearly on the poster.
Its setting is pastoral. The surrounding land is used for herding, and routes across the region connect settlements, wells and markets. Within the town, the street network is simple and fairly regular, and tracks radiate from the edges into open country, where the linework almost disappears.
