From above, Abhayāpuri doesn't follow a strict grid. Its streets loosen outward from a compact centre into lanes lined with homesteads, bamboo groves and ponds. The Brahmaputra floodplain lies to the south, and forested hills rise nearby. On a map, the town looks like a cluster of short roads held together by a few main routes.
The town is in Bongaigaon district of lower Assam and is closely tied to the former Bijni estate, whose royal family kept a residence here. That history can still be read in the layout: a handful of older roads lead towards the centre, and newer housing has filled in around them over the decades, while water tanks and fields still cut into the built-up area.
