Acerra sits on the fertile, level plain northeast of Naples, in a landscape of fields, market gardens and small towns joined by long straight roads. On a map the historic centre forms a compact, irregular core around the baronial castle and the cathedral. Newer neighbourhoods extend outward in a looser grid. Beyond them, fields stretch across the plain in narrow strips.
The town is ancient. Acerrae was already a settlement in the Roman period, and it has been rebuilt several times over its long history. Acerra also claims a close connection to Pulcinella, the masked character of Neapolitan comedy. The castle houses a museum dedicated to him. Nearby, the Regi Lagni, a system of straight drainage canals built largely under Bourbon rule, still divide the plain.
An Acerra map poster shows an old town and a planned agricultural landscape side by side. The historic centre is compact and organic, and the surrounding plain is a pattern of canals and field roads in firm lines. Mount Vesuvius rises to the south, beyond the frame, but the map belongs to the flat land and its long, patient design.
