Ponza is the largest of the Pontine Islands, off the coast between Rome and Naples. On the map it is a long, narrow crescent with a heavily indented coast. There are small bays, sea stacks and steep headlands along both sides. The main harbour town sits in a sheltered bend, where houses rise in tiers above the port.
Ponza has been inhabited since ancient times. The Romans cut tunnels through its rock, including one that leads to Chiaia di Luna, a curved beach below a high pale cliff. In summer the island is a favourite with boaters from Rome and Naples, who anchor in its coves.
A Ponza map poster shows a single winding road following the island's spine, with the harbour streets clustered at the point where the crescent bends. Smaller islets appear offshore. The coastline is detailed enough that the island's edges look almost carved.
