Akhtyrskiy is an urban-type settlement in the Abinsky District of Krasnodar Krai, in the transition zone between the Kuban lowland and the first ridges of the north-western Caucasus. On a map this shows up clearly. To the north the land is open and farmed, while to the south streams cut into rising, forested ground.
The settlement is known for its connection to oil. Extraction in this part of the Kuban foothills goes back to the nineteenth century, and small-scale infrastructure has been part of the local landscape for generations. The street layout reflects a practical, working settlement: fairly regular blocks and long residential streets lined with houses and gardens.
