Al Khurmah lies east of Taif in the interior of the Mecca Region, on the high plateau where the mountains descend toward the desert. From above, the town is a set of loosely connected districts built around a few main roads, with blocks arranged in a mostly rectilinear pattern. Around the settled area, the ground opens into dry valleys and wide, empty land.
The town is the centre of a governorate of the same name and grew as an oasis, with date palm plantations traditionally tied to its wells and wadis. On a map, cultivated plots appear as a finer texture next to the regular residential blocks, and the wadi beds show as faint, winding lines crossing the plain.
