Al Maḩmūdīyah lies on the flat alluvial plain south of Baghdad, in the land between the Tigris and the Euphrates. The town grew along the main road running south from the capital toward Hillah, and on a map its streets form a dense core around that route, with newer blocks spreading outward on either side.
Water shapes the surrounding land. A network of irrigation canals and drainage channels runs across the fields, many of them straight lines drawn by engineers, others older and more sinuous. Palm groves and orchards fill the spaces between the canals, and the pattern of plots gives the edges of the town a finely divided texture.
