Al-Musayab lies on the Euphrates in Babil Governorate, on the level plain of central Iraq. From above, the river is the organising line. Built-up areas sit along its banks, and a bridge ties the two sides together. Beyond the streets, the land is divided into narrow fields and orchards fed by irrigation channels, and they stretch out in every direction.
The town sits on the route between Baghdad and the holy cities to the south, and it has long served as a stopping point for travellers and farmers. Its map shows that dual role clearly. There is a practical grid of residential blocks and market streets, set inside a far older agricultural pattern shaped by water.

Around the built-up area, a fine mesh of canals and ditches divides the plain. It creates a delicate texture that is quite unlike the denser streets of the centre.

The bridge over the Euphrates joins the two halves of town. It is one of the few places where the street pattern continues unbroken from bank to bank.
