Albacete stands on the open plain of La Mancha, with no river valley or hillside to bend its streets. The result is a city that expands evenly in every direction, its centre a web of older lanes around the cathedral, surrounded by wide avenues and orderly blocks. A ring of boulevards and newer districts marks each stage of its growth across the level ground.
The most striking shape is the Recinto Ferial, the fairground built for the September fair. Its circular plan, with concentric rings and a long entrance, earned it the local nickname of the frying pan. The city is also known across Spain for its knives, a craft tradition that goes back centuries and is still celebrated in a dedicated museum.
