Alcobaça lies on the far southern coast of Bahia, the stretch known as the Costa das Baleias. On a map the town sits at the mouth of the Itanhém River. The river curls through low ground to the sea, and the town's streets form a modest grid on the land beside it. A road follows the shoreline in both directions past beaches and coconut groves.
The Costa das Baleias takes its name from the humpback whales that migrate to these waters each winter to breed. Offshore lies the Abrolhos archipelago and its marine park, reached by boat from towns along this coast. Onshore the landscape is flat, with sandy soils, the river's curves and a few roads leading inland.
