Alegre lies in the south of Espírito Santo, in hilly country not far from the Caparaó range. The town is built in a valley, and its layout follows the terrain closely: streets run along the river and the lower slopes, with neighbourhoods climbing into the surrounding hills where the ground allows.
The area is traditionally agricultural, with coffee and cattle among its long-established activities. Alegre is also a university town, hosting a campus of the Federal University of Espírito Santo, which brings students from across the state. On the map, the campus appears as a distinct area of larger buildings and open ground.
