Alexânia is in the state of Goiás, on the BR-060 highway that links Brasília with Anápolis and Goiânia. On a map the highway cuts a long, straight line past the town, and the urban area spreads beside it in a mostly regular grid of blocks. Around it the cerrado plateau opens out into farms and patches of native vegetation, with small streams marked by strips of woodland.
Its position between two major cities has shaped both the town's economy and its outline. Traffic between the federal capital and the heart of Goiás passes right by, and the land along the highway has drawn shops and services. These include a large outlet shopping centre that attracts visitors from Brasília.
Away from the road the pace is slower, with residential streets, squares and churches typical of a town in Brazil's interior.
