Allauch sits on the hills northeast of Marseille, at the edge of the limestone massifs that surround the city. The map shows a small old village climbing a slope below a rocky ridge. Narrow lanes wind up the hillside, and villas and hamlets spread out along roads that follow the valleys and wooded slopes.
The windmills on the ridge above the old village are the town's best-known landmark and can be seen from far across the Marseille basin. The hills around Allauch, toward the Garlaban and the Étoile range, are closely linked to Marcel Pagnol, whose childhood memories of these hills became well-loved books and films.
An Allauch map poster shows how the village sits between the city and the hills. There is a tight core on the slope, curving roads spreading downhill toward Marseille, and large empty areas of garrigue and pine forest rising behind it. It is a quiet, typically Provençal composition.
