Alta Floresta d'Oeste is a young town. It grew during the settlement of Rondônia in the late twentieth century and became a municipality in the 1980s. The suffix d'Oeste, meaning of the West, sets it apart from Alta Floresta in Mato Grosso. From above, its streets form a straight, planned grid, the kind laid down quickly as new settlers arrived.
The most striking pattern lies outside the town. Settlement in this part of the Amazon followed straight rural roads cut at regular intervals, with farm plots strung along each one. Seen from above, the result is a strict geometry of parallel lines over what was once continuous forest, a pattern recognised across Rondônia.
