Alto Paraíso is a municipality in the Brazilian state of Rondônia, in the western Amazon region. It is one of the towns that grew during the settlement of the state in the late twentieth century, and its map reflects that. There is a compact, planned grid at the centre, and around it a vast rural territory structured by roads.
From above, the clearest feature of the surrounding land is the network of long, straight side roads that branch off main routes at regular intervals. This pattern is typical of Rondônia's colonisation areas. Farms line these roads, and rivers and remaining forest take softer, irregular shapes in between.
