América Dourada is a municipality in the interior of Bahia, in the central-northern part of the state, far from the Atlantic coast. The town at its centre is compact, with a short grid of streets arranged around the core. On a map it appears as a small, tightly drawn cluster, surrounded by open land crossed by long rural roads and the lines of field boundaries.
The name, meaning Golden America, gives the place an unusual ring among Brazilian towns. The surrounding region is semi-arid, and farming shapes the landscape, which from above looks like a patchwork of fields, tracks and reservoirs.
