Amīr Kolā lies in Māzandarān province in northern Iran, on the flat, humid plain between the Alborz mountains and the Caspian Sea, just north of the city of Babol. It belongs to the ring of towns around Babol. On the map it sits close to its larger neighbour but keeps its own distinct street pattern.
The land here is low and well watered, and farming shapes everything around the town. Straight roads run out across the plain, lined with houses, and the spaces between them are divided into small plots and paddies. Irrigation channels and minor rivers draw thin, meandering lines through the fields and soften the edges of the built-up area.
