Amparafaravola is a town in the Alaotra-Mangoro region of Madagascar, on the western side of the basin around Lake Alaotra, the country's largest lake. On a map the setting is striking: the town sits between low hills and a wide, flat plain of rice paddies, crossed by irrigation channels and dikes that divide the land into a fine, regular pattern.
The Alaotra basin is often called the rice granary of Madagascar, and agriculture defines the area. Toward the lake, marshes and reed beds form irregular shapes, while the fields beyond are laid out in straight lines. Amparafaravola itself has a compact centre, with roads leading toward the plain and on to neighbouring towns across the region.
