Saint-Denis occupies the northern coast of Réunion, where a strip of relatively level land meets the Indian Ocean before the island rises steeply toward its volcanic interior. The map reflects this vividly. A compact grid fills the lower town near the sea, and as the land climbs, streets become winding roads that switch back up the slopes toward the heights of Le Brûlé and La Montagne.
The city is the administrative capital of Réunion, an overseas department of France. Its historic centre holds Creole houses with verandas and ornate ironwork, many along Rue de Paris, while the seafront Barachois, with its row of old cannons, faces the ocean. The Rivière Saint-Denis cuts a deep ravine along the western side of the centre, a natural edge to the old town.
