Rodrigues Map Poster & Print
Rodrigues is an autonomous outer island of the Republic of Mauritius, lying several hundred kilometres east of the main island in the Indian Ocean. It is small and hilly, with a central ridge and slopes that run down to the sea on every side. Its capital, Port Mathurin, is a quiet town on the northern coast, where the harbour and most administrative life are found.
The most striking feature of Rodrigues from above is its lagoon. A broad ring of shallow water, enclosed by a coral reef, surrounds the island and is larger than the island itself. Small islets sit within it, and the reef line forms a second, wider outline around the coast.
A Rodrigues map poster shows this doubled shape: the land in the middle and the reef-edged lagoon around it. The island is also known for the Rodrigues solitaire, a flightless bird related to the dodo that became extinct centuries ago. Today the François Leguat reserve, named after an early settler who described the bird, is home to giant tortoises.
