Apatin lies on the left bank of the Danube in the far northwest of Serbia, where the river forms the border with Croatia. The town's layout is typical of Vojvodina's planned settlements: long straight streets meeting at right angles, arranged in a neat grid that runs right up to the riverbank.
The Danube here is broad and slow, and the land around it is wide floodplain. The Gornje Podunavlje nature reserve covers much of the surrounding area, with backwaters, oxbows, marshes and riverside forest. On a map these appear as a maze of winding channels next to the town's straight lines.
Apatin is known across the former Yugoslavia for its brewery, home of Jelen beer, which has been brewing here since the eighteenth century. An Apatin map poster sets that orderly Danube town against the river and its wild floodplain, two very different patterns in one frame.
