Zemun Map Poster & Print
Zemun lies on the right bank of the Danube, just upstream of where the Sava joins it. For centuries it was a separate town on the Habsburg side of the border, facing Ottoman Belgrade across the rivers. On a map that past is still easy to read. Zemun's old streets are narrow and irregular, and they climb a hill. To the south, New Belgrade is laid out as a large, rigid grid.
Gardoš hill rises above the old town. Its Millennium Tower, built in 1896, is Zemun's best-known landmark. Below it, the riverside quay runs along the Danube, lined with restaurants and moored boats. Across the water, the Great War Island is an undeveloped green space at the mouth of the Sava.
A Zemun map poster shows a real contrast of urban form. On one side is an organic river town, and on the other a socialist-era grid. The Danube curves along the northern edge. The hill, the quay and the island all make distinct shapes, even in a monochrome print.
