Ara Ali lies in the south of Ethiopia's Oromia region, far from the highland cities most people picture when they think of the country. From above it looks like a small, low-density settlement: short streets, scattered plots and a few routes heading out across the surrounding country. There is no river-cut old core and no ring road, just the simple structure of a working town.
That simplicity works well on paper. The main lines through town are easy to follow, and the gaps between buildings keep the streets legible even at small scale. Further out, buildings give way to open land, and the frame becomes a study of how a settlement sits within its surroundings.
