Arāria lies in the northeast of Bihar, not far from the border with Nepal, on the wide, flat plain shaped by rivers coming down from the Himalaya. From above, the town is a compact cluster of streets, with roads and a railway leading out across open country. Small rivers, old channels and ponds are scattered around it, and the landscape is marked by water.
This is flood country, and the map reflects it. Waterways shift across the plain, and fields fill the land between them. The town's built-up area is dense at the centre and loosens quickly, with villages dotted along the roads. It is a working district town serving a large rural hinterland.
