Āreka lies in the southern Ethiopian highlands, in the South Ethiopia Regional State. On a map, the town has a main road running through it, with streets branching off on both sides into residential blocks. The edges of the town soon give way to farmland. The surrounding countryside is hilly and heavily cultivated, with small plots, homesteads and footpaths covering the slopes.
The town is a market centre for the surrounding rural area and is known in Ethiopia for agricultural research, with a research centre focused on crops suited to the southern highlands. The land around it is fertile and densely settled. Like much of this region, it supports mixed farming, including enset, which is a staple food across southern Ethiopia.
